Blogging and the (sort of) guilt that comes with it

Dave White wrote an interesting post called “The Blogs that Bind” that starts with this quote:

I dislike blogging.

Of course you do. That’s why you wrote this long post about disliking blogging. It’s like writing a 10-page analytical paper about writer’s block and how you had absolutely no idea about what to write.

But I read on, intrigued by the interesting hook. (Look! A two dollar word that all writers must know.)

He focused on blogging to promote books, but, obviously, that’s not applicable to me. I’m only 18. (Let’s just forget about the Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and the Christopher Paolini’s of this world at the moment; they make me feel horribly inadequate.)

He did make me ask myself: why do I write? Why do I even care what I write and paste up on the Internet where no one will see? Why is that?

I’m not really sure, except for the fact that I enjoy pasting stuff up on the Internet that sounds somewhat interesting to at least one person in the world. I like getting feedback about what I write.

Because of that, I probably have what Mr. White calls a “train wreck” blog. Do I take myself to seriously? Probably not as much as this blog makes me seem. Hmm… I don’t try to force myself to be happy-go-lucky or snarky. I mean, I wouldn’t jump outside in the 32 degree weather wearing shorts.

How is that relevant? Who knows.

All I know is, blogging is blogging. It’s a single arm of the person I am; it’s not everything I am. I just do things because I enjoy them. But after a point, maintaining a blog becomes a chore. I haven’t touched this blog for a month.

And it’s always been at the back of my mind. I felt bad. But you know what? I don’t even have regular readers.

I guess that’s what he means by taking myself too seriously.
